Event News: Moonrise Viewing at Fort Ancient Earthworks

Want to experience what the Hopewell saw 2,000 years ago? Come to this rare lunar event at Fort Ancient burial mounds this weekend!

Every 18.6 years, the moon completes its cycle and reaches its northernmost rising point. This year, the cycle reaches its end! Come see the Northernmost Rising Point alignment built into the 2,000-year-old earthworks at Fort Ancient, marking the end of the current lunar cycle.

The Fort Ancient Earthworks, built by the Hopewell people over 2,000 years ago, were intricately designed in alignment with the lunar cycle, showcasing their remarkable understanding of astronomy. These earthworks serve as a testament to Hopewell’s connection with the cosmos, symbolizing both cultural significance and technical skill in marking lunar alignments. By observing the moon from these ancient grounds, we can glimpse into the past, seeing what the Hopewell saw all those years ago.

The Warren County Astronomical Society will be on site with telescopes for public viewing and to answer questions.

This event is for all ages with activities both inside and outside of the museum. Admission is free!
